The Challenge

Producers struggle with inconsistent grading, slow manual sorting, and delayed decisions in high‑throughput environments. Variations in lighting and human judgment further reduce accuracy, while cloud processing can add latency and bandwidth costs. These issues highlight the need for a reliable and scalable automated solution to maintain consistent quality and operational efficiency.

 

The Solution

An AI-based palm oil maturity classification system powered by AIEdge-X®310 was deployed at inspection and sorting points. The system captures images of oil palm fresh fruit bunches (FFB), processes them locally, and performs real-time AI inference at the edge. Each fruit bunch is automatically classified into maturity levels such as Unripe, Intermediate, and Ripe, enabling accurate and timely grading and sorting decisions without reliance on cloud connectivity.

The Technology

The solution uses NEXCOM AIEdge-X®310 as the core edge AI platform for computer vision applications. The system captures images from IP or USB cameras and performs real-time AI inference directly on AIEdge-X®310, enabling fast and reliable palm oil maturity classification at the inspection point. When additional connectivity is needed, AIEdge-X®310 can be used to expand I/O and integrate with other systems. By running AI locally on an industrial-grade platform with NVIDIA® GPU acceleration, the solution ensures stable 24/7 operation while reducing latency, network usage, and dependency on cloud processing.

The Impact

After deployment, the AI-powered palm oil maturity inspection system improved grading accuracy and consistency while reducing reliance on manual inspection. Real-time edge AI processing accelerated inspection and sorting operations, helped maintain stable crude palm oil (CPO) quality, reduced network usage, and supported scalable multi-site deployment, with AIEdge-X®310 at the core of the solution.
